Here’s a screenshot from my own Mac showing it digging down into the biggest user of space in my own Library folder… There are various apps available to do this, but if you’re looking for a free solution then I’d recommend OmniDiskSweeper. ![]() Now you know that, you need an easy way to look through it. From experience, though, most content can be found in your ~/Library folder. This is where it gets a little trickier, as clicking on “Other” in the sidebar rarely yields anything useful. You may also see a storage category named “Other Users”, and this is different – this represents data being used by different user accounts that you have set up on your Mac. For example, Microsoft Outlook data will often appear as “Other”. Other is anything that’s taking up storage space and can’t be placed in one of the standard categories. ![]() Alternatively, you can use the options on the “Recommendations” screen (as above) to automatically free up storage space. Clicking into any of the categories on the left-hand side will then show, on the right, further information. If you then click on “Manage…”, you will be taken to a detailed breakdown of use. After a short pause whilst it works out your storage usage, it will show a pretty graph. On the tabs running across the resulting screen, click on “Storage”.Click on the Apple logo in the top-left corner.Viewing your Mac’s storage and how it’s being allocated is quite a simple task… So what is it and what can you do about it? How to check your Mac’s storage Maybe that is my file-system point of failure. If you’ve ever checked your Mac’s storage, you may come across the unhelpful category of “Other” and, sometimes, it can amount to quite a considerable amount (if this is the case, our guide on reducing Mac System storage might be up your alley). I will probably change it to RAID 1 from here on out, as I just read that BTRFS doesn't support SHR as far as all the file-system anti-corruption methods go. It sounds like Complexmojo accidental delete occurred while some kind of system files where selected. Intentionally or accidentally pressing these buttons will obviously delete the selected files/folders (just as using Finder will do). Secondary thought: I have always used SHR for my RAID type. OminDiskSweeper and DiskWave, the two apps of this kind that I'm familiar with, both have delete/trash buttons. So what do you guys think about staying with BTRFS? I am on the fence about switching back to ext4 and never using BTRFS again. Should I not ever set the volume to perform data scrubbing? ![]() I think a scheduled Data Scrubbing triggered this failure, as it says "Unable to run data scrubbing because the storage pool is in abnormal status. If this was a NAS used in a business, this would be a devastating, unacceptable event.īoth of my hard drives are showing Normal and Healthy. I luckily have a complete backup of my data, but it is going to take DAYS to copy it all back over. The only option it is giving me is to remove the Volume and create a new one, essentially wiping all my data. I have no options for troubleshooting or repairing the file system. I thought that BTRFS was supposed to be much more stable and was supposed to have built-in protections to keep these kinds of problems from happening. So I just wanted to get opinions on if I should stay with the BTRFS file system or go back to ext4 as I rebuild my NAS again.
